How to Establish an Energy Program

April 2nd, 2010 No comments

Recently I was asked about establishing an energy management program.
The first step in establishing an energy management program is to know the monthly consumption data for energy at each of your various school sites. For oil fuel heating, this means that each school district should know the amount of fuel oil on-hand at the beginning of the month, what was added to the tanks during the month, and the amount of fuel on-hand at the end of the month. By taking a simple calculation of adding the beginning amount on-hand to what was purchased, and then subtracting what is on-hand at the end of the month, you can easily determine the consumption of fuel for the month.

For natural gas and electricity, this means examining the monthly invoices to determine the amount consumed during the month.

This information should be entered into a utility management system on a monthly basis in order to track the consumption patterns for energy.

How do you track your energy consumption?  Let me know.
